Dental Anxiety: How to Find a Gentle Dentist and What It Costs
Afraid of the dentist? Here is how to find a patient, gentle dentist in Ontario, what calming options cost, and ways to keep the bill down.

Fear of the dentist is common, and it often leads to putting off care until a small problem becomes a big, expensive one. Finding the right dentist can break that cycle.
What to look for
- A dentist who listens. At the first call or visit, notice whether they ask about your fears and take them seriously.
- A slow pace. Many dentists will agree on a stop signal and take breaks.
- Clear explanations. Knowing what is coming helps.
- No judgment about how long it has been.
Reading reviews can help, but treat them as one clue among several.
Ways dentists help anxious patients
- A short first visit, with a talk and a simple check
- Numbing and good pain control
- Music, headphones or other distractions
- Nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”), which some clinics offer
- Oral sedation or IV sedation, offered by some dentists with specific training
Not every office offers every option. Ask what is available and what it costs.
What it can cost
Costs vary by office. As a rough guide:
- A regular check-up and cleaning often costs $150 to $300.
- Nitrous oxide may add around $50 to $150.
- Oral or IV sedation can add several hundred dollars or more.
Treat these as general ranges and ask each office for current prices in writing.
Ways to lower the cost
- Ask for an estimate before any treatment.
- Check your benefits. Many plans cover part of dental care but not always sedation.
- Explore the Canadian Dental Care Plan if you qualify. Check eligibility on the federal website.
- Try teaching clinics. Dentistry and dental hygiene programs may offer lower fees. Appointments are longer, which some anxious patients find calming and others do not.
- Ask about payment plans for larger treatment.
- Do not wait. Small fillings and cleanings cost far less than root canals or extractions.
Questions to ask before you book
- Do you see patients who are nervous about dental care?
- What calming options do you offer?
- What does each cost?
- Can we start with a short first visit?
- Will you give me a written estimate?
