Affordable Naturopathy in Canada

Naturopathic medicine is not covered by any provincial health plan. A first consultation typically costs $120 to $250 and tends to run considerably longer than a family doctor appointment, with follow-ups at lower rates.

Public coverage differs from province to province. Where a rule below names a provincial plan, check the equivalent where you live — Canada.ca lists them all.

What regulation does and does not mean

Naturopathic doctors are regulated in Ontario by the College of Naturopaths, so the title is protected, entry standards exist and complaints have somewhere to go. That is a genuine protection and worth confirming on the College register.

Regulation governs who may practise; it does not by itself establish that any particular treatment works. Naturopathic approaches vary widely in the strength of evidence behind them. Treat naturopathic care as a complement to medical care rather than a replacement for it, and tell your family doctor what you are taking — supplements interact with prescription medication more often than people expect.

Where the money goes

The consultation is rarely the whole cost. Laboratory testing and supplements are usually billed separately and can exceed the appointment fee, sometimes substantially. Ask for the expected total across the first few months, not just the price of the first visit.

Many workplace plans cover naturopathic visits, commonly $200 to $500 a year. Supplements are almost never covered.

How paying less works here

You name the most you can pay per visit and we match you with NDs registered with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario who have agreed to work within it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does naturopathy cost without insurance?

Privately, naturopathy in Canada usually costs $120 to $250 per visit, depending on the city. A first appointment sits at the top of that range or above it, because it is longer and includes an assessment. Through AffordableHealth.ca, professionals who have opted into sliding-scale pricing currently start at $120 per visit.

Does OHIP cover naturopathy?

No. Naturopathic care is not covered by OHIP. Many extended health plans include it, though often with a lower annual maximum than physiotherapy or massage.

Why is the first visit more expensive than the ones after it?

A first appointment with a naturopathic doctor (nd) normally runs $250 to $325 because it is longer and includes a full history and assessment. Follow-up visits are shorter and typically cost $120 to $185. When you are comparing prices, make sure you are comparing the same kind of visit.

Can I ask for a lower fee?

Yes, and it is more common than people expect. Many naturopathic doctor (nd)s keep a small number of reduced-fee places for people paying out of pocket, but they rarely advertise them — you have to ask. That is what this site is for: you tell us what you can afford, and we only introduce you to professionals who have already agreed to work in that range. It is free for patients and we do not take a share of what you pay.

Will my work benefits pay for it?

Often, at least in part. Extended health plans usually set an annual maximum per service rather than covering everything, and many require the practitioner to hold a specific designation. Two things worth doing before you book: ask your insurer what your remaining balance is for this year, and ask the clinic whether they can bill your insurer directly so you are not out of pocket while you wait for reimbursement. A Health Spending Account can usually be used for the rest.

How do I check a naturopathic doctor (nd) is properly registered?

Every naturopathic doctor (nd) practising in Ontario must be registered with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario, which publishes a free public register you can search by name. It shows whether the registration is current and whether there are any restrictions or discipline findings. We check this register before a professional appears on AffordableHealth.ca, and re-check it on a schedule — but you can and should look anyone up yourself.
